School Chat Page

School Chat Page

A very common question and discussion point for all people is about their recent experiences. E.g. 'How was your day?' 'What did you do at school today?' 'Did anything special happen today?' Also, regular communication between schools and home can be quite time consuming and difficult to regulate at a quality level as much as we would like to. Both of these become even more difficult if the child has barriers in their communication.

This 'School Chat Page' is one way to help facilitate communication between a child and their caregivers and staff and peers at school. The child could either circle the activities they have participated in at school after they have completed them or just before home time as a reflection on their day. This can promote conversation between the staff or peers and the child as they are discussing relevant and recent activities the child has experienced at school. Once the child is at home, the child can use the page as a means of engaging in conversations with caregivers about their experiences at school. It is also useful for staff to communicate what has occured throughout the child's day or if there was anything special on. E.g. birthday party, special event, received an award.

How it could be used:

  • laminated with 'Home Chat Page' on reverse side to be used on a daily basis with a whiteboard marker

  • to answer questions about their school day

  • to ask questions of others about their school day

  • to support in talking about their day with family members

  • to 'check in' and 'check out' with staff and caregivers

  • support routine and unexpected activities

  • caregivers and staff communicating what the child's school day has incorporated.
