Volume Scale

Volume Scale

Description of Resource:

This Volume Scale is a visual tool that reminds students to speak at a regular volume, so that they can be more easily understood. It can be helpful to the student that talks very quietly or very loudly and, as a result, is difficult to understand. It provides a non-confrontational, systematic and visual way for prompting the student.

How would you use it?

There are many ways to use the resource. You may use it when working 1:1 with a student to give them feedback about their volume. e.g. 'wow you are talking very quietly- can you say it louder?' whilst pointing at the picture.

You could also use the scale with a larger group and have it displayed within the classroom to refer to, and give general feedback to the class, or during a specific lesson or project 'e.g. I like how everyone is speaking nice and queitly with their partner'.

How could you adapt it?

Some suggestions to personalise the resource:

1. The pictures could be changed to suit the student's personal interests.

2. You could have an additional picture (or token) that you use to move up and down the scale to provide ongoing feedback.

3. The student could use it to self evaluate their volume and the volume of other communication partners.
