Phonological Awareness
Phonological Awareness is the ability to analyse and decode the sound structures of a language at a word, syllable and sound level.
Phonological awareness involves a range of skills with different levels of complexity that in typically developing children starts at the age of 3 and continues till 6-7 years of age.
Phonological awareness skills include:
Breaking/ segmenting words into syllables/ beats.
Identifying and generating rhyming words.
Identifying sounds in words and then being able to manipulate these sounds
Blending sounds to form words
A strong foundation of phonological awareness skills can help a child learn to spell and read.
