Picture Exchange Communication System
Picture Exchange Communication System
Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a method of AAC that focuses on teaching a child to exchange a picture as a request.
The teaching protocol contains 6 phases and progresses the child from exchanging one symbol as a request, to asking questions and making comments using a sucession of picture symbols.
PECS cards are traditionally carried in a folder. However, there are many additional ways to store cards for requesting. These may be on a lanyard, displayed near an activity, on a laminated piece of paper or even affixed to a wall.
The resources attached can be used with a child who communicates using PECS. More information and formal training for communication partners can be found at: www.pecsaustralia.com.au
